Ball, Charles (1832-1901)

Transcription of Obituary in the Christian Messenger

MR. CHARLES BALL. – At Ipstones, in the Cheadle Circuit, our church has suffered a loss by the death of Brother Charles Ball, who was one of the oldest members, having been connected with the church for nearly fifty years, a class leader for about 30 years, and a Trustee of long standing. During the last five years of his life our brother had suffered from bronchitis, and was unable to attend the services as often as he desired. But his end came somewhat suddenly, for he had only taken to his bed a few days when he quietly and peacefully passed away to his eternal rest on Thursday, October 31st, 1901, at the age of 68 years. There was a large attendance at the funeral. The services at the chapel and in the cemetery were conducted by the minister, Rev. F.B. Ridge. A memorial service was held on Sunday, November 17th, conducted by Mr. A. Whieldon, of Blakeley Lane. A vote of condolence was sent to the bereaved family from our last quarterly meeting.

Charles was baptised on 30 December 1832 at Ipstones, Staffordshire. His parents were Thomas, a labourer, and Catherine.

Charles married Hannah Alsop (abt1834-1904) on 8 November 1855 at Ipstones, Staffordshire. Census returns identify eight children.

• Hannah Maria (1865-1920) – married John Docksey, a farmer, in 1889
• Mary Alice (b abt1868) – a servant (1891)

• Sarah Ellen (b1877) – a servant (1901)

Charles died on 31 October 1901 at Ipstones, Staffordshire.
