Rees, Charlotte (nee Morgans) (1826-1901)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

CHARLOTTE REES was born at Meadow Town, Minsterley Circuit, and was the youngest of a family who were staunch Primitives. Fifty years ago she became wife to Mr. Cornelius Rees, who also sprang from a good Primitive stock. It was, therefore, no wonder that they opened their house for our people to conduct public services. About four years afterwards, the power of God came down upon them like a copious shower, and both yielded in their own home to be saved from sin. Rev. James Huff was the preacher. They ‘never will forget the day when Jesus washed their sins away.’ And the marvellous manifestations of power in those early days are often related with faces wet with tears, and yearnings for their return. For 46 years she was a consistent member of our Church. No matter who changed, or left, or what reverses the Church suffered, she remained the same. When Zion prospered she rejoiced. When the Church languished she prayed. In prayer she talked with God as friend with friend, till her heart burned with love toward Him. That love evinced itself in her love to God’s servants. Hers was an open house for the preacher. Her table, her apartments, her best services to God’s servants augmented her joy. Under the darkest cloud she felt the hand of God. In the hour of sorrow and bereavement she leaned upon the bosom of Omnipotence and found comfort. As wife and mother, and in all domestic relations she was most thoughtful and diligent. ‘She opened her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue was the law of kindness.’ By precept, prayer, and example, she sought to bring her children near to God that He might bless and save them. On the morning of April 12th, 1901, she rose as usual, took breakfast, pursued her general work for about an hour, then suddenly ceased to work and live – aged 75 – this is as she wished it. To her sorrowing husband she said, ‘Don’t trouble about me, l am ready.’ She was interred in Luton churchyard on Tuesday, April 16th. Rev. William Jones, Tunstall, assisted by the vicar, conducted a most impressive service in the house, and Rev. L. Miles officiated at the grave. On Sunday the Circuit minister conducted a memorial service in Aymestry chapel, where crowds of people gathered to pay their last token of respect.
