James, Elizabeth (nee Jones) (1836-1899)
Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger
MRS. ELIZABETH JAMES, of Lower Garn, Blaenavon circuit, died happy in the Lord on June 29th, 1899, aged 63. She was born in Abersychan, and was converted to God in our Abersychan chapel whilst a scholar in our Sabbath school, one of her quarterly class tickets bearing date ‘November, 1849.’ She went to reside for a time in Lancashire, and whilst there, she and her brother opened Haydock for preaching services, she having had her name placed on the Preachers’ Plan of the circuit. Some years ago she returned to this, her native circuit. In her days of health and strength her whole soul was thrown into the work of God; and her efforts for the spread of ‘the common salvation’ were helped by the force of her own godly character and her consistent life. To the very last she worked her missionary box, and manifested an anxiety for the progress of the work of God. She was long and heavily afflicted, but through all her sufferings she was sustained by the love and power of the covenant-keeping God, whom for the greater part of her life she had joyfully and perseveringly served. A large number of friends assembled at the funeral, and with much feeling witnessed the interment, which took place in the Trevethin parish churchyard.
