Upton, Ellen (1806-1837)

Died at Macclesfield, April 26,1837, Ellen Upton, aged thirty-one.  In early life she was brought to God under the P. Methodists, at Hanging Bridge, then in Belper circuit.

She was the first of a large family who became a disciple of Jesus Christ; but she pleaded with God till both father, mother, brothers, and sister, were brought into the way; her sister followed her example of serving the Lord in early life.

Sister Upton greatly delighted in labouring with souls in distress, and saw many brought to the Lord,

From Hanging Bridge she, removed to Darley, near Derby; and her zeal in the cause was so manifest, that her name was put on the plan as an exhorter; and she laboured with success.

In her dress she was plain; and of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

From Darley she removed to Hanging Bridge, where a revival broke out, in which she took an active part.

About the year 1830, she removed to Macclesfield; and her regular attendance on the means of grace, and care for the welfare of the church, were much admired.  After she was married, family cares came on; but she continued to love God and his cause.

In her last illness she had a mighty conflict with the powers of darkness, but wrestled with God till liberty was obtained.  She then said, “For me to live is Christ, but to die is gain.  Come, Lord Jesus, and come quickly.”

She gave up her children, saying, “The Lord will provide for my children, I know he will.  Bless the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me praise his holy name.”  She departed in great peace.
