Lane, Francis William Edward (1879-1898)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

F.W.E. LANE, Smethwick, Birmingham, after ten days severe illness, left his earthly home for the heavenly mansions, on December 20th, 1898, at the age of 19 years, and was interred in the Uplands Cemetery, Smethwick, on December 24th, the late Rev. M. Nicholas, circuit minister, giving a suitable address. Francis was born in the city of Gloucester, and after living a short time in Gloster and London he with his parents removed to Newport, Mon., where at an early age he began to attend class and his name was entered on the roll. In 1896 he removed to Birmingham, and at the time of his death he was a member of the Third Circuit, and a teacher in the Regent Street Sunday school. About eleven months before his death he reconsecrated himself to Christ and showed signs of great usefulness. On Sunday evening, January 15th, 1899, a memorial service was held in Regent Street Chapel, when the Rev. M. Nicholas preached a striking and impressive sermon from the words: ‘And Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.’ It was the last sermon the grand old man preached. Alas how little did we think the old warrior would so soon follow the young disciple (in whom he look so much interest), to the palace of the king.

Francis was baptised on 5 October 1879 at St James, Gloucester. His parents were Francis, a bricklayer, and Sarah Ann.
