Smith, Herbert (1885-1914)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

THE Penrhiwceiber Society in Mountain Ash Circuit has suffered a great loss in the decease of Brother Herbert Smith. Born at Sharston in Wiltshire in 1885, his parents being devoted members of the village church, he was early brought under religious influences. Upon attaining manhood, he left the country village for the mining valleys of South Wales. About two-and-a-half years ago he removed with his wife to Penrhiwceiber, where, under the influence of his brother-in-law, he was induced to unite in church fellowship. He soon manifested considerable enthusiasm, and, being an efficient musician, he was appointed to be the choirmaster. In disposition he was gentle and retiring, but having found the sphere in which he could best serve the church and Sunday school, he became a devoted worker and rendered valuable service. His kindly, gentle spirit soon won its way into the affection of all his co-workers and his passing has caused a vacancy which it will be difficult to fill.

We were just beginning to know his worth and were looking forward to years of helpful fellowship and service. A chill contracted at work brought on a severe attack of rheumatic fever, and pneumonia developing, he succumbed to his illness in five days. During his conscious hours he often spoke of his loving Saviour, and with surprising energy sang some of his favourite hymns. He was only twenty-nine years of age when the call came to join in the triumph song of the Redeemed, and his young widow and child are left to mourn their loss.

A large company gathered for the last ceremonies. The service at the residence and by the graveside was conducted by the Rev. T. Richardson.

On the following Sunday evening a Memorial Service was held in the church, when a touching tribute to his memory was given, and many hearts turned away from the sadness of parting to the hope of a glorious reunion.

Family and other information

I have been unable to unambiguously identify the family of Herbert from census returns. It is likely he was born at Sherston rather than Sharston.

A death is recorded in the Pontypridd Registration District, correct for a death in Penrhiwceiber, for Herbert C. Smith in Quarter 4, 1914.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
