Gotherd, John (1798-1837)

John Gotherd, of Wardle, Rochdale circuit, was brought to know the Lord in the thirtieth year of his age; after which he lived much in the practice of private prayer and reading the Bible.  He read it through several times, and would say, O, how I love thy law! thy law is within my heart.  He suffered much affliction, but was patient and resigned to the will of God.  He felt much for his family, and used to take his son John into the Wood, to pray with and for him.  John is now an active, zealous follower of Christ, and a member of our society.  His wife also was brought under the word, through hearing one of our preachers in the open air.  Now Brother Gotherd, his wife, and their son, went on their way rejoicing.  The class met at their house, and it was the preachers’ home.

The last three years, our Brother was much afflicted; but his soul was renewed day by day.  He felt dead to all things here, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.  The last day of his mortal life, ho said, “I shall soon land — I have fought the battle.  I have the victory through the blood of the Lamb.”  He fell asleep, January 17, 1837, in the thirty-ninth year of his age, leaving a widow and two sons to lament their loss.  I preached his funeral sermon from Rev. vii. 14. to a large attentive congregation.
