Houlston, John (1821-1904)

Transcription of Obituary in the Christian Messenger

Bro. John Houlston of Knockin Heath, Llanymynech Circuit, departed this life March 5th, 1904, aged 82. He had been a member of the Connexion sixty-four years, and a local preacher sixty-three years. Throughout his long life John Houlston maintained such a consistency of conduct and devotion to the best interests of the Church and his fellow men as to render him quite conspicuous amongst his brethren. Every department of Christian work claimed and received some share of his self-denying labours, but perhaps we may specially mention that he collected over £111 for the missionary cause, and that he have great and sustained attention to the young, being superintendent of the Sunday school for considerably over a generation, having at an early period originated it. His last days were calm and peaceful. His wife Eliza survived him but eight days. Their married union had been a long and happy one.
