Honor, Mary (nee Jackson) (1846-1930)

Obituary in Primitive Methodist Magazine, 1930, p.493

84 years ago, in the town of Driffield, Mrs Mary Honor first saw the light. She was the daughter of Thomas Jackson, a prominent official of our Driffield Church. Early in life she dedicated herself to Christ and Christian work. In the early 70s she became the wife of the Rev C G Honor, who was then travelling at Bridlington. During their married life they brought up a numerous family, when salaries were small and difficulties great. Yet she bravely faced the situation, trained her children in the fear of God, and did what she could to aid her husband in his great work. She knew both joy and sorrow; but she was able to cast her burdens upon the Lord. Some of her family are on the other shore. Her husband pre-deceased her 26 years ago. The other children are rendering good service, either at home or abroad. Mrs Honor was a person of pronounced views, strong faith in God, and ripe Christian experience. In later years she resided at Bridlington, where she died, May 21st 1930. The interment took place in Bridlington Cemetery, a well-attended service having previously been held in our St John’s Church, conducted by Rev A J Bull, an old friend of the family.

Notes

Mary married Richard Welbourn, a watchmaker, in 1865, at the age of 19. Three years later, Richard died at the age of 26, leaving Mary a widow at the age of 21, with two small boys, Alfred (2) and baby Ernest.  In 1871 she and the boys were living in Driffield with her widowed mother Mary.  It seems that they might have stayed behind when Mary married a travelling preacher with 7 children, as they both died in Driffield.  In 1881 the boys were staying with an Uncle and Aunt (their father’s sister) in Driffield.  Ernest was only 15 when he died in 1883, and Alfred was 49, also dying before his mother in 1915.
