Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

BRO. WILLIAM YOUNG was born at Clotton Common in the year 1835, and was a member of the Primitive Methodist Connexion for over half-a-century. His parents were pious people, his father a local preacher, therefore, he was brought up under good influences. He gave himself entirely to God and His work after attending some special services at Cotebrook; he then joined our cause at Clotton, Chester Circuit, and was useful in the Sunday school, and occasionally took appointments for his father. In the year 1880 he removed to Tarporley, where he was a class leader for some time, and remained a member until the 28th day of February, 1900, when the great Head of the Church called him home.

He suffered with asthma for many years, but was very cheerful, patiently bearing his sufferings, never murmuring or complaining. For three or four years he had not been able to attend the means of grace, but constantly inquired about the people of his choice, and was much interested in all Christian work. Brother Young was fond of singing one of his favourite hymns, being No. 332 in Hymnal, ‘My soul is now united,’ etc. His confidence in Christ never wavered, for he enjoyed the full assurance of being the Lord’s. His end came rather suddenly: he was conversing with our minister and the writer the night before his decease. Deep sympathy is felt for the family, and we trust that God’s blessing will rest upon each one of them, that they may be graciously sustained through their sore bereavement, and kept faithful until they shall meet to part no more. He was interred in the churchyard, at Duddon, on March 5th. A short service was conducted in the house on the day of the burial by the Rev. W. Radnor and Mr. J. Povah, who at the request of the family attended the funeral. Both Tarporley Society and Quarterly Meeting sent expressions of esteem and sympathy to the sorrowing family and relatives.

William was born abt 1826 (not 1835). He was baptised on 27 January 1828 at Tarvin. William’s parents were Robert, a farm labourer, and Martha.

William married Ann Johnson (1819-1898) on 20 August 1851 at Tarvin, Cheshire. Census returns identify four children.

• Martha (1852-1924) – married Henry Willis, a farmer, in 1872
• Daniel (1854-1925) – a bricklayer
• Mary A (abt1858-1951) – married Samuel Watson, a miller (1911), in 1881
• Robert Thomas (1862-1930) – a wheelwright (1911)
