Burton, John (1835-1912)
Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by G.
John Burton, of Cressbrook, in the Bradwell Circuit, passed away on November 23rd, 1912, aged seventy-seven years. A man of singular worth and character, his genuine goodness was none the less real because of its quietness; his faith was clear and sweet, his piety simple. Loyalty to the Church he interpreted as loyalty to Christ. His home was opened for Sunday Schools at Sitton and Cressbrook. A society steward and class leader, he gloried most of all in being a children’s man. He received a medallion for long service, an illuminated address from our Connexional school authorities, and another from the teachers and scholars in his own school. A member for sixty-seven years, he was school superintendent and teacher for fifty-six. We pray for the family mourning his loss.
