Ferriday, Jonah (1817-1900)

Transcription of Obituary In the Christian Messenger

MR. JONAH FERRIDAY, late of Oakengates’ fell asleep in Jesus on November 10th, 1900, aged 82. This venerable saint finished an exemplary Christian course in the peace of God. He gave his heart to God in one of our services held in a cottage in Oakengates over forty years ago, since which time he maintained an unbroken fellowship with us. He adorned his membership with a zeal, a consistency, and a happy perseverance that earned for him a universal respect – a respect that deepened with his increasing years. Enjoying the full confidence of his brethren he was appointed to the offices of Sunday school teacher, treasurer, and superintendent, also of society steward and class-leader, and of treasurer to the trustees, all which positions he filled with humble fidelity. He never lost his spiritual-mindedness, his godly simplicity, nor his tender-heartedness. His piety shone at home. He lived a sanctified life before his family; and his prayers and example are, for them, a precious inheritance. Through his surviving family he will, though dead, be yet speaking. Such a prayerful, humble, earnest, loving life as his, if lived up to throughout the official and unofficial ranks of our Connexion, would place it on higher ground than it has even yet reached.—W. FORTH.
