Gapp, Charles James (1841-1915)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J.H.T.

Nothing for a long time has evoked such widespread sorrow in Matlock as the news of the death of Mr. Charles James Gapp on August 10th, 1915. Mr. Gapp was a native of London, being born in June, 1841.

For over thirty years he was actively connected with St, Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Ealing, being treasurer for many years and elder until his death. Heart trouble brought him to Matlock six years ago, and he attended our Church and later joined in membership. He was always so kindly and so modest, with a cheery word for everyone. Regular in his attendance at the services, he was never absent from the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Generous in the circuit and to the Connexional funds, the poor found in him an unfailing friend. He had a genius for sympathy with those who were afflicted or in trouble.

He was interred at Hanwell Cemetery on August 13th.

Charles was born in June 1841 at Islington, London, to parents Charles James Gapp, a licensed victualler (1851), and Ann Russell.

Census returns identify the following occupations for Charles.

  • 1851 scholar
  • 1861 grocer tea
  • 1871 grocer & wine merchant
  • 1881 grocer (employing 19 men and 13 boys)
  • 1891 grocer
  • 1901 grocer
  • 1911 chairman of limited company (general grocers)

He married Lilly Ann Patterson (1851-1894) on 22 April 1873 at Holy Trinity Brampton, Middlesex. Census returns identify three children.

  • Arthur Charles (1875-1946) – a grocer (1921)
  • Lilly Maria (1877-1899)
  • Leonard Paterson (1883-1963) – a wine merchant (1901); lived in Ceylon and South Africa before retiring to UK in 1959

Charles died on 10 August 1915 at Matlock, Derbyshire. At the time of his death he was resident at Smedley’s Hydropathic Establishment in Matlock. His estate was valued at just short of £12,000.
