Hulstone, Joseph Henry (1850-1914)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J.O.

Joseph H. Hulstone passed away on January 18th of this year. In spiritual lineage he was of the quality that made our Church, and emulated his famous sire in fidelity to its interests. At Acock’s Green he held services, first, in his own house for our people, then in a little mission room. His attachment to our Birmingham First and Fourth Circuits was of sterling value. During the years when the evangelist’s home “kept the little chapel open at Lovely Lyndon End” Joseph H. Hulstone and his boys were consistent supporters. Their home at Lyndon Green became our “Lord’s hostel” for brethren who supplied the pulpit.

Recently they removed to Butler’s Lane, Four Oaks. True to his character for fidelity and missionary enthusiasm, he allied himself to the Birmingham Mission. A link with the earlier missionary history, and living exponent of aggression and Connexional enterprise, he seems to have passed from us when most needed.

The funeral services were conducted at Yardley Cemetery on Friday, January 23rd, by Revs. H. Roe, T.R. Maland, and Joseph Odell. May all comfort be given to the wife left in loneliness and the three sons.

Joseph was born in late 1850 at Hagley, Worcestershire, to parents Joseph Hulston, a farmer (1851), and Sarah Richards.

Census returns identify the following occupations for Joseph.

  • 1881 farm bailiff
