Johnson, Jane (1784-1836)

Jane Johnson was born in 1784, and died Nov.28, 1836.

In 1823, the P. Methodists visiting South Shields, her heart was opened, and she received the word with all readiness of mind; was convinced of being an undone sinner, prayed to God for mercy, and the Lord spoke peace and pardon to her soul, so that she could rejoice in God her Saviour.  She joined the society, and continued to ornament her profession by an upright walk and Christian deportment.  On account of poor health she could not always attend the means of grace; but when hindered by ill health, she would cause her daughter to read the scriptures, and would exhort and pray with her family.

Her leader, William Wake; says, she frequently said to him that she only wished to be as the Lord would have her to be.  He also says she had, for years, conducted herself with Christian rectitude; was blest with an even temper, and appeared always to be of one mind.

Nov. 28,1836, about eleven o’clock at night, she was suddenly taken ill; and before twelve her spirit took its flight to the realms of bliss, in the fifty-second year of her age.  “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.”
