Jeffries, George (1853-1916)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by L.H.W.

The decease of Mr. George Jeffries, of West Norwood, London, leaves a sense of profound loss in his home, and also in the Knight’s Hill Church. A local preacher for more than forty years, an earnest worker in the Sunday school and Band of Hope, he will be sorely missed.

Early  in life he was associated with the Croydon Circuit, but the last twenty-seven years were spent on the Forest Hill Circuit. He was a trustee of the Knight’s Hill Church from its erection. Generous, capable, and proud of his denomination, Mr. Jeffries gave unstintedly both time and means to promote its prosperity. He did a great deal of good work quietly. For many years he filled the important office of district secretary of the Independent Order of Rechabites.

The last rites were observed in the Knight’s Hill Church, on May 16th, and later in Norwood Cemetery. Rev. G. Bennett paid a fitting tribute. Rev. L.H. Wood conducted the committal service. Much sympathy is felt with the widow and family, of whom three sons have joined the Colours.
