Jones, Jane (nee Gould, nee Jones) (1827-1909)

Primitive Methodist Magazine 1910

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by Joseph J Hodson

Mrs. Jones has all through life been an ardent Christian worker, and her death has been a very serious loss to the Dinas Society, in the Rhondda Circuit. Born at Llwynbarred Farm, Radnorshire, on the 15th of May, 1828, she grew up a typical child of the country, and married Mr. James Gould, of Gellifach Farm. Six years after marriage the couple removed to Pontypool, where they took a very active part in the work of our Church, acting as caretakers for the chapel, and providing a home for the ministers.

For more than four years Mr. James Gould was the Sunday School Superintendent. He conducted the first anniversary, when the proceeds amounted to only £1, and had the pleasure of seeing it rise to over £3.

Mr. Jones was her second husband, and lived at Dinas. From the time of her second marriage to her death she remained true to the Dinas Society through all its trying circumstances—a period of more than 30 years.

Mrs. Jones was always an ardent Sunday School worker, and took a special interest in the anniversary of Dinas, always collecting on that occasion sufficient provisions to provide for the teas of all the teachers and scholars. A regular and faithful attendant at the means of grace, her sunny face is sorely missed by both preacher and people.

At the ripe age of eight-one she died on December 9th, 1909, and leaves sons and daughters to mourn her loss. Many of them are enthusiastic Christian workers, and Mr. John Jones is the organist and choirmaster of Dinas to-day. She was familiarly known as Granny Jones, and all who have come into contact with her have paid high tributes to her Christian character and service. She was interred at Llethrddu Cemetery, Trealaw, on Monday, December 13, 1909.
