Rains, Henry (1833-1913)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by A.W.

Mr. Henry Rains passed home to God on 14th November, 1913. He was born on November 3rd, 1833, at Griff Grange, Ible. In our little chapel at Ible, erected largely through the efforts of his father, the son was converted in 1847. He at once joined our Church, and remained in membership until his death sixty-six years afterwards.

For several years a very acceptable local preacher, he was also a trustee of several Primitive Methodist chapels, and a Sunday-school worker until growing infirmities compelled him to relinquish the duties. About twenty-seven years ago he settled in Buxton, and for twenty years was treasurer of our Buxton Trust.

His goodness was simple and sincere. He said little, but his life told powerfully for God. Before coming to Buxton he was a farmer, and, it is said, regularly called his servants together night and morning for worship. He died in the faith he had espoused as a youth of fourteen. He and his wife were reading the Bible together, as was their custom before retiring to rest, when the call to higher service came.

He leaves a wife, two sons and a daughter to mourn his loss; all are members of our Church. A largely attended memorial service was conducted in our Buxton Church on November 18th, after which the mortal remains of our friend were interred at Burbage.
