Shields, Joseph (1853-1895)

Transcription of obituary published in The Builder

MR. JOSEPH SHIELDS – We regret to announce the death of Mr. Joseph Shields, architect, Sunderland, who died on the 22nd ult.,  at Edentown, Carlisle. Mr. Shields was a well-known Primitive Methodist and had erected a large number of churches and schools for that body in the North of England. He was recently appointed architect for the Sunderland Union Infirmary, which he won in competition. Mr. Shields was a member of the Northern Architectural Association.

Family

Joseph was born on 8 April 1853 at Barnard Castle, Co. Durham, to parents Ralph Shields, a PM minister and Sarah Thompson. he was baptised on 26 June 1853 at Barnard Castle.

Census returns identify the following occupations for Joseph.

  • 1871 apprentice architect
  • 1881 architect (and surveyor)
  • 1891 architect

Joseph died on 22 December 1895 at Edentown Stanwix, nr. Carlisle, Cumberland.
