Siddle, George (1849-1910)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by J.W.E.

Our Church at Peel Street, Thornaby, has again suffered a severe loss by the death of our respected brother, George Siddle, which took place on Wednesday, March 16th. Our dear brother was formerly and for some years a class-leader in the old chapel in New Street, and although he relinquished that office he has always remained a staunch and consistent worker, being a Trustee of our present church in Peel Street, and one who was ever anxious for the success and advancement of the Master’s work and the salvation of men. He died happy in his Saviour’s love.

George was born in the summer of 1849 at Full Sutton, Yorkshire, to parents Thomas, who worked the land, and Helen.

Census returns identify the following occupations for George

  • 1871 labourer at iron works
  • 1881 labourer in ironworks
  • 1891 horse driver
  • 1901 cartman

He married Margaret Elizabeth Elliott (abt1858-1930) in early 1887 in the Middlebrough Registration District, Yorkshire. Census returns identify one child.

  • Mary Jane (b1887-)assisting mother in general dealing business (1911)

George died on 16 March 1910 at Thornaby on Tees, Yorkshire.
