Simmons, Jane (nee Rigby) (1872-1916)

Transcription of obituary published in the Primitive Methodist Magazine by James Wright

Jane Simmonds was born at Crawford village, St. Helens Circuit, in 1872. Her parents were devoted members of our Church. From a child she had a devout mind and a religious nature. She appeared to be under the grace of God from childhood, and could point to no time when it was not her desire to be good and to do good. When fourteen years of age she joined the Church.

It was within the sphere of home a she appeared to the best advantage. To guide the house, to make it cheerful and attractive, to train her children rightly were aims in which she succeeded. The present writer made the acquaintance of our deceased sister and her husband over twenty years ago, and has had correspondence with them through all these years. Life to her was a solemn trust, but she was always cheerful, bright and hopeful. So she lived, doing the duty of life in the sphere where God had placed her, ministering to the pleasure and highest good of others, and growing in likeness to the Master day by day.

She was apparently strong and healthy, but she suddenly passed away on a radiant spring-time Sunday evening, when out walking in the country with her husband. Her life was divided between the Crawford village and Douglas Bank, Wigan, and it was whilst resident in the latter place that the end came. May the bereaved ones, when the toils of earth are ended, have a blessed re-union in heaven.
