White, Simon (1802-1836)

MEMOIR OF SIMON WHITE,

(Local Preacher, Brinkworth circuit.)

Simon White was born at Brinkworth in the year 1802.  His parents not being religious, he was left to his own inclination, and was led to sin and folly.

On hearing the P. Methodists, he was convinced of his awful state, fled to Christ, obtained the pardon of his sins, and was filled with joy and peace.  He joined the society, and was a steady member, and regular in his attendance on the means of grace.

In 1830, he was put on the plan, regularly attended his appointments, and the Lord owned his labours.

In 1836, he was visited with an affliction which terminated in death.  During his illness, his mind was unalterably fixed on God.  He at times felt a desire to recover, and asked me if I thought he would soon die.  I informed him of my opinion, that he would soon be with Jesus.

When his wife and children were weeping, he would say, – “Weep not for me. I shall soon he in heaven.”

On one occasion, when some of his friends were with him, he was much blessed; and though weak in body, yet, while singing, “No chilling winds,” &c., his voice was heard above all.  His heaven on earth was now begun.  He said, “I shall soon be with Jesus.”  I shall soon be gone.  Bright angels are waiting to take me home to glory.”

He died November 20, 1836, aged thirty-four years, leaving a wife and five small children to lament their loss.

Many of the friends attended his funeral; and after the internment, Bro. Timmins preached a sermon without the church-yard.  His funeral sermon was preached by Brother Garbutt to a densely crowded congregation.  May we follow him as he followed Christ.
