Henry was born in the spring of 1861 at Leeds, Yorkshire, to parents Robert Barber, a blacksmith, and Ann Elizabeth Bride.
Census returns identify the following occupations for Henry.
- 1881 railway clerk
He arrived in Australia on 25 July 1889 on the Garonne.
He married Laura Elizabeth Pickett (1858-1930) in the spring of 1889 in the Greenwich Registration District, London. Laura was a sister of Rev. Henry John Pickett. Australian records identify four children.

- George Calvert (1893-1967) – a Methodist minister
- Benjamin Aquila (1897-1960) – a bank inspector
- Brainerd Bride (1898-1899)
Henry died on 16 July 1938 at Port Phillip City, Victoria, Australia.
