On the basis of the Report of the Westgate Circuit may I suggest the following biography might fit?
James Bourn or Bourne
born Whickham 4 March 1812 and baptised 25 March 1812, Whickham
married 17 June 1838 Christ Church, Tynemouth to Euphemia Renwick
1841 Census: King William Street, Gateshead. Chainmaker
1851 Census: Ellison Square, Whickham. Chainmaker
1861 Census: Bethesda Chapel, Chapel Street, Gateshead. Hammerman
1871 Census: 21, Hector Street, Gateshead. Blacksmith ( on son’s marriage certificate in 1874, Chainmaker)
1881 Census 21, Hector Street, Gateshead Timekeeper
Buried, Gateshead Cemetary 1886, from 5, Ord Street, Gateshead.
Euphemia, his wife, was born in Winlaton 1811 died in Gateshead 1882
They had six children, according to census records and geneaological sites: Margaret (1840-1921), James (1842-1926), Elizabeth Jane (1844-1876), Mary Ann (1847-1929), William (1850-1874) and Euphemia (1851-1853).
Bethesda was the Methodist New Connexion chapel in Gateshead, and as Henry was living there on Census day 1861, I would suggest that this is evidence that this may well be the correct Henry Bourne, and that he and his family had migrated from Primitive to new Connexion Methodism at some point between 1838 and then.
This note from the Report of the Westgate Circuit, March 4 1837 supplies some additional details:
Henry Bourne is a single man 25 yrs of age, he gives in this year intending to marry. Called out by Newcastle – travelled there 9 months – Stockton branch of Sunderland Crt. 6 M. – Ripon 1 yr. – Berwick 1 and Westgate 1 year. Making 4 years and a ¼ come conference – we consider him capable of superintending – is attentive to discipline – no smoking of tobacco – not in debt – is a family visitor – a peaceable man – his preaching is acceptable – preaches a full, free and present salvation – is successful in the conversion of sinners – conduct good.
A later note says that ‘he left us at Midsummer.’
