John Butcher was sent by the Bolton circuit, about six months after it was formed, to mission the Isle of Man in January 1823. His mission was successful; by March 1823 one hundred and ten members had been gathered into society and Castletown and adjacent places were formed into a separate circuit.

He was married to Mary.
John was buried on 19 September 1842 at St Giles and St Mary, Pontefract, Yorkshire.
