Transcription of obituary published in the Minutes of Conference by George Stansfield
ROBERT CANNON was born at Ramsey, in the Isle of Man, September 27th, 1840. His parents were members of long standing amongst us, his father being a local preacher. Robert was strictly moral from childhood; and when 19 years old he gave his heart fully to God. Soon afterwards he became an acceptable local preacher; and when 22 years old he was called out to travel.
In 1862 he was stationed at Whitehaven, and in 1863 and 1864 at Berwick-upon-T’weed, when he resigned the ministry, that he might be better able to maintain his widowed mother. In 1868 he was again called out by Ramsey, his native circuit, and afterwards he laboured in Liverpool 2nd, Chester, and New Mills circuits. On Friday, December 29th, 1871, he asked his Circuit Committee to allow him to rest for a few weeks, as he felt it impossible to continue his labours without exposing himself to serious risk. The Committee, deeply sympathizing with him, granted his request. On Monday, January 8th, 1872, he left his circuit, never more to return thereto.
The same evening he landed in his island home, hopeful that his native air would have a salutary effect on his feeble frame. But he was doomed to disappointment; consumption manifested itself in its most virulent form, and he rapidly sank. Yet, in the depths of his affliction, he was patient and serene; and on the eve of his departure he expressed his resignation to the divine will, and assured his friends that he had a prospect of a better inheritance beyond the grave. On Saturday, February 3rd, 1872, he breathed his last, in the glorious hope of immortality. He was studious, humble, peaceable, affectionate, and an acceptable preacher.
