SAMUEL GEORGE COBLEY: born of sturdy Christian parents at Dawsmere, Lincolnshire in 1883. He was a joiner by trade but was called to the Primitive Methodist Ministry and entered Hartley College, Manchester. He was ordained on 1 May 1915 at Attleborough in the Norwich District Synod. He served in the following circuits: Ipswich and Hadleigh, Aylsham, Coalville, Clayton West, Walkden, Heywood, Oldham, Manchester, New Mills, and then as an active supernumerary in the Brighouse Circuit. He retired to the Stevenage and Knebworth Circuit, where he helped, almost up to the time of his death, in the expanding claims of the New Town.
He was always a student searching for truth. His sermons were most carefully prepared and were delivered with intense conviction. He was popular in all his circuits and was frequently invited to return to former churches for special occasions. His administration of Church affairs was marked by great attention to detail and always ably done. As a pastor he was large-hearted, sympathetic and most assiduous in visiting, and won the affection and confidence of his people. He was a member of the Executive of Hartley-Victoria College. He contributed to the Holborn Review and the Methodist Magazine. We died suddenly on 19 June 1960, in the seventy-seventh year of his age and the forty-ninth year of his ministry.
