Albert Cowell: born in Blackburn on 9th February 1908. After being employed in commerce for some years, he entered the ministry in 1934 and was trained at Hartley College. During his ministry he travelled in the following circuits: Ramsor, Chesterfield (Holywell Cross and Staveley), Morecambe and Heysham, Shrewsbury, Stewkley, St. Columb and Padstow, Fakenham and Wells, and St. Just.
An able administrator, he brought to his ministry the meticulous order and mental discipline he had learned in his commercial occupation. He loved people and is remembered in all his circuits with gratitude and affection for his constant devotion to those in his care. He preached the Gospel and taught the faith with quiet conviction and a pleasant cheerful manner. He revealed a remarkably clear and logical turn of mind and was a shrewd judge of men and matters.
He was blessed with a kind sense of humour and his native Lancastrian wit often illuminated a dull moment in a meeting or a difficult passage of Scripture in a sermon. He disliked personal vanity or any display of pretentiousness and, though he was unwell for some years before his death, he preferred not to draw attention to his ill-health but to continue to live a normal, active life to the end. He was wonderfully supported in his work by his devoted wife, who was a constant source of help and encouragement to him. He died on 4th February 1976, after being taken ill on his way to Synod. He was in the sixty-eighth year of his age and the forty-second year of his ministry.
