William was born on 20 January 1813 at Thornsett, nr New Mills, Derbyshire to parents John and Mary. He was baptised on 19 March 1813 at New Mills Wesleyan Chapel.

Ministry

Petty relates how William, when stationed at Maidstone, made progress in opening up Gravesend. Initially the 32 mile round trip from Maidstone was met with congregations of four or five people. They persevered and within a year had 65 members and 100 Sunday School scholars.

Family

William married Mary Clarkson (b1821) of Bishop Wilton on 18 September 1840. Census returns identify seven children.

  • Mary Ann (1843-1918) – married John West (d1878) and then Dan Snook, a builder
  • John (1845-1910) – a printer compositor
  • Elizabeth (1848-1931) – a draper and dressmaker
  • Arthur William (b1850)
  • Clowes (1852-1864)
  • Charles Clarkson (b1857) – a draper
  • Laurina (1859-1861)

William died on 21 July 1898 at Glastonbury, Somerset.
