John was born in 1830 on the Isle of Man, to parents John and Jane. He was baptised on 21 February 1830 at Rushen, Isle of Man.
Before entering the ministry, John was apprenticed to a blacksmith.
He married Ellen Schofield (1831-1903) in the spring of 1857 in the Haslingden Registration District, Lancashire. Census and birth records identify three children.

- William Davidson (abt1863-1938) – a civil servant (1919)
John died on 28 September 1923 at Wellington, New Zealand.
