Family
Edward was born in the spring of 1867 at Paulton, Somerset, to parents William, a coal miner, and Jane.
Before entering the ministry Edward worked as a coal miner. His marriage record describes him as an assurance agent. The 1901 census records Edward as a coal miner and in 1911 he was working as a colliery examiner.
He married Phyliss Harvey (1868-1948) on 16 August 1891 at St. Luke, Bedminster, Gloucestershire. Census returns and birth records identify five children.

- William John (1896-1966) – a school teacher (1939)
- Stanley (b1899) – served in RAF in WW1; a school teacher (1939)
- Thomas (b1903)
- Edward Ronald (1912-1982) – a school teacher (1939)
Edward died on 10 September 1923 at Penzance, Cornwall.
