Gibbons, Stephen Reynold (1835-1916)

Family

Stephen was baptised on 25 December 1835 at Ulceby By Barton, Lincolnshire. His parents were John, a shoe maker, and Caroline.

Census returns identify the following occupations for Stephen.

  • 1851 apprentice
  • 1861 Home Mission minister at Duke Street Chapel, Doncaster
  • 1881 private school teacher and Methodist local preacher
  • 1891 schoolmaster
  • 1901 schoolmaster
  • 1911 schoolmaster

He married Hannah Lodge (b abt1835) in early 1860 at Doncaster, Yorkshire. Census returns identify two children.

  • Gertrude Hannah (1861-1898) – married William Jubb, a railway coach builder (1891), in 1888
  • John Angell (1862-1927) – a school master and local preacher (1881); a free church minister (1911)

Stephen died on 10 June 1916 and was buried on 14 June 1916 at Doncaster, Yorkshire. 

Stephen’s marriage appears to have been the primary cause of him leaving the itinerant ministry.
