Family
Bailey was born on 16 July 1843 at Grassington, Yorkshire, to parents William, a tailor, and Betty. He was baptised on 23 June 1844 at Linton in Craven, Yorkshire. His older brother, James was a Methodist New Connexion minister in 1861.
He married Amy Smith (1846-1923) in early 1868 at Wellington, Shropshire. Census returns identify seven children.
- Elsie (b1868) – a governess in private school (1891)
- Clifford (1871-1949) – a tramway motorman (1911); a tramway inspector (1923)
- Ianthe (1874-1952) – married Richard Sivel Popplewell, a grocer’s manager (1901), in 1897
- Neville (1876-1943) – a sorting clerk and telegraphist (1911)
- Romillie (1879-1915) – a mill clerk (1991); died in WW1
- Bailey (1881-1972) – a grocer’s assistant (1911)
- Hermia (1887-1960) – married Edwin Harker, a farmer & builder (1939), in 1916
Bailey died on 5 October 1916 at Grassington, Yorkshire.
