Family
John was born in early 1841 at Halifax, Yorkshire, to parents John, a worsted weaver, and Sarah.
After leaving the ministry John became a successful builder in Scarborough, Yorkshire – his estate was reported as £28,000 – a tidy sum in 1911.
He married Ann Holder Langdale (1845-1927) in the summer of 1867 at Pickering, Yorkshire. Census returns identify three children.
- Thomas Langdale (1868-1920) – an engineer (1911); died in Minnisota, USA
- James Crossland (1870-1944) – a professor of music 91911)
- Annie Elizabeth (b1873) – married George Barnard Black, a solicitor, in 1902
John died on 4 February 1911 at Scarborough, Yorkshire.
