Transcription of obituary published in the Minutes of Conference
REGINALD HODGKINSON: born in Derby on 4th October 1905. He worked in his father’s business, and responding to the call to the ministry was trained at Hartley College. He served in the following circuits: Wisbech (Church Terrace); Sheffield Mission; Pocklington; Silsden; Oldham (Wesley); Altrincham; and Southport (North). It was necessary for him to retire on health grounds in 1962: for twenty-four years he lived at Bamber Bridge, Preston and the final six years of his life were spent at Lancaster.
He married Mary Townsend in 1934, and she shared fully in his work, and delighted with him in their three daughters and their families. It was Reg’s desire that his obituary should be brief and contain no fulsome tributes. But those who knew him want to put on record the fact that he was a gracious man, clearly experienced in the depths of prayer. He was musical, with a fine voice; a good preacher, with an excellent use of words; a quiet and dedicated pastor who left his mark on those he cared for. Simplicity, and thankfulness for the love of Christ were his hallmarks.
He fought illness for over thirty years. Though this was a frustration to him, people around him were aware of God’s grace in him: he ministered to them without being aware of it. He died peacefully on Sth August 1992, in the eighty-seventh year of his age and the sixty-second year of his ministry.
