Family
Walter was born on 12 January 1845 at Norwich, Norfolk, to parents Richard Howchin, a PM minister, and Mary Ann Ward Goose.
The family emigrated to Australia in 1881. He became a lecturer in Geology and palaeontology at the University of Adelaide in 1902. Walter was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of London in 1878.
He married Esther Gibbons (1846-1924) in the summer of 1869 in the Glanford Brigg Registration District, Lincolnshire.

Walter died on 27 November 1937 at Adelaide, South Australia.
