Jones, James Leonard (1905-1990)

Transcription of obituary published in the Minutes of Conference

JAMES LEONARD JONES: born at Royston in Yorkshire on 22nd September 1905. He trained at Hartley College and served his probation in Amble and Eyemouth. He was ordained at St John’s, Sunderland, in 1936. He then served in the following circuits: lpswich (Rope Walk), Letchworth, St Neots, Farsley, Pudsey and Yeadon, Mansfield (Central), Rugby, Retford, Wath and Mexborough, Cleckheaton, and Tamworth. 

In 1937 he married Doris Olive Chastney of Tatterford, Norfolk, from whom he received unfailing support throughout his ministry. They retired to Scarborough in 1971. 

He died on 1st April 1990 in the eighty-fifth year of his age and the fifty-eighth year of his ministry. At his own request there is no further obituary.

Family

Leonard was born on 22 September 1905 at Royston, Barnsley, Yorkshire, to parents Leonard, a coal miner, and Florence. He was baptised on 11 October 1905 at St. John the Baptist, Royston.

He married Doris Olive Chastney (1904-1991) in the summer of 1937 in the Walsingham Registration District, Norfolk. Birth Records identify two children.

Leonard died on 1 April 1990 at Scarborough, Yorkshire.
