Jacob was born on 10 October 1853 at Chadderton, Lancashire, to parents John, a herbalist, and Sarah. He was baptised on 20 October 1858 at St Paul, Royton, Lancashire with two older siblings.

Census returns identify the following occupations for Jacob.

  • 1901 Insurance agent
  • 1911 PM minister
  • 1939 retired Methodist Minister

He married Alice Smith (abt1856-1920) in the summer of 1882 at Chadderton, Lancashire. Census returns identify two children.

  • Sandy Smith (1883-1977) – assistant secretary at cotton spinning mill (1911); a cotton yarn salesman & secretary (1939); a yarn agent (1942)
  • Alice Forster (1890-1980) – a science student (1911); a technical assistant electrical engineering (1939)

Jacob died on 22 April 1942 at Oldham, Lancashire.
