William was born on 11 November 1858 in Lancashire. He was brought up in the Anglican tradition and was confirmed at Wharton, Lancashire. He studied engineering for a time and emigrated to New Zealand in 1880.

William married Lillian Mary Deakin (1865-1966). In 1898 he is recorded as having one daughter.

He was President of NZ PM Conference in 1895 and also edited the “New Zealand Primitive Methodist

William trained for the ministry as a private student at Three Kings Wesleyan Methodist College, Auckland and entered the ministry in 1884.

He was described as having “an unassuming disposition”, and being a “man of quiet dignity, and as a diligent student, spending a considerable portion of his time in his study, which is well stocked with standard works of the day”.

William died on 13 November 1927 at Christchurch, New Zealand
