Misterton: Primitive Methodists: On Sunday week special sermons were preached  in the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Misterton by the Rev. J. Scruton, of Doncaster. Both the services were well attended. On Monday the foundation stones of a new chapel were laid, the first by Miss A. Threadgold, of Misterton, who made a gift of £40; the second by Mrs. Charles Strawson, of Misterton,who gave £15, and a number of bricks were also laid by friends. At the close of the ceremony the Rev. J. Scruton delivered an interesting address on the ground. Tea was provided in the Temperance Hall, to which a numerous company sat down. The following gave trays:-Mesdames Threadgold, Strawson, Collingwood, Cook, Clifton, Codd and Foster. There was a public meeting in the hall afterwards, Mr. Littleworth, of Gainsboro, presiding. The Rev. J. Scruton and J. Stephenson, Messrs. C. Leafe, Martindale, and J. Fogg, and Mrs Markham, of the hall, gave addresses. Votes of thanks were given to all who had in any way assisted in making the service a success. The total amount raised was £146 16s 41/2d.

Misterton: Chapel Opening: On Sunday week, the Primitive Methodist Chapel opened. The Rev. T. Grainger, of Lincoln, and the Rev. C. Leafe, of Hornsea, preached. On Monday Mrs. Markham, of Hull preached, after which tea was provided, trays for which were given by Mrs. Threadgold, Mrs. Strawson, Mrs. James Gagg, Mrs. Codd, Mrs. James Hill, Mrs. Collingwood, Mrs. Adkin, Mrs. Jackson, and Mrs. Nash of Walkeringham. A public meeting in the chapel was presided over by the Sheriff of Lincoln (G. C. Duckering, Esq.) and speeches were delivered by Mrs. Markham, and the Revs. T. Granger, C. Leafe, J. Stephenson, P. P. Peacock, and G. C. Martindale. The Gainsborough Primitive Methodist choir rendered efficient aid, Miss Platt presiding at the harmonium. The tea and collections realised £56, and donations £51.

Primitive Methodist Sunday School Gathering at Intake:

A united gathering of Sunday Schools connected with the Sheffield First circuit took place at Intake yesterday. The teachers and children began to arrive from Mosbro’ and Beighton early in the afternoon, when the village assumed a very lively and holiday-like appearance. Bethel children and parents conveyed from Sheffield in vehicles supplied by Mr. Thompson. At three o’clock they assembled in a field near the chapel (kindly lent by Mr. Cartledge), where they sang the Centenary Hymns of the Sheffield Sunday School Union. The Revs. W. R. Fellas, J. Barfoot and G. G. Martindale took part in the proceedings.

Intake Primitive Methodist Chapel: The annual bazaar was held in the school room on Monday week and realised upwards of £25. On Monday last the New Year’s tea was provided by the young men of the church, and was attended by upwards of 100 persons. In the evening a public meeting was held in the chapel, chairman, Mr. H. Tugby. The financial statement was given by Rev. G. G. Martindale.

Primitive Methodism at Rotherham: The Primitive Methodists of the Rotherham Circuit, held their June quarterly meeting on Monday, at their lLloyd street church, Parkgate. The Rev. J. G. Smith was voted to the chair. The Rev. G. W. Turner was secretary. The Jubilee Chapel Foundation stones are to be laid at Woodhouse Mill on June 20th. A vote of cordial appreciation was passed to Rev. S. Brock for his services during the three years ending next July, and due provision was made for the reception of the Rev. G. G. Martindale. Tea was well served to 140 adults and at 0630, the Rev. J. P. Bellingham discoursed a large congregation on “The Power of Genius”.

The quarterly convention and committee meeting of the Primitive Methodist Sunday School and Band of Hope Union (Rotherham Circuit branch) was held in the Methodist schoolroom at Kilnhurst, on Saturday. The Rev. G. G. Martindale (the newly appointed minister) presided, and there was a good attendance. After tea, an open session was held, under the presidency of Rev. G. W. Turner. The Rev. G. G. Martindale read a very able paper on “Order and discipline in our schools”.

Rotherham (Wellgate) Primitive Methodist Chapel:-The anniversary sermons of the Band of Hope were preached by the Rev. J. Teese, of Stavely, on Sunday, the congregation being very large. In the afternoon there was a children’s service, when an address was given by the Rev. G. G. Martindale of Rawmarsh. Last evening there was a ham tea and service of song.

Dale Road Primitive Methodist Church, Rawmarsh:-On Sunday, the anniversary services of the above were held, Rev. Henry Kirk, of Bradford, preaching. On Monday evening, Mr. Kirk gave his lecture, “The protestant Martyrs of Scotland”. Mr. John Spick presided. On Tuesday evening the annual soiree was held, after which Mr. Joseph Outram presided ; addresses were given by Revs. J. G. Smith,  C. J. Martindale, Councillor Clarke, and Mr. J. Fletcher. The total proceeds for the event was £25.

Missionary Meeting at Rotherham:-The annual missionary meeting was held at Wellgate Primitive Methodist Chapel, Rotherham, last evening, Mr. C. Hopkinson presided. The Rev. G. W. Turner read the annual report. The meeting was addressed by the Revs. Theos Parr, M.A., J. G. Smith, G. G. Martindale and G. W. Turner.

Congregationalism at Rawmarsh, Opening of New Sunday Schools:-Yesterday the new Sunday Schools, which have been erected at a cost of £1150 in Stocks Lane, Rawmarsh, were opened. A procession, consisting of superintendents, scholars, and teachers, headed by the Parkgate Brass Band assembled in the old schools, and walked to their new buildings. Present was G. G. Martindale

Sunday School Convention at Park Gate:-On Saturday, the annual meeting of the Primitive Methodist Sunday School and Band of Hope Union (Rotherham Circuit Branch) was held at the bethel Church, Parkgate, at which there was a good attendance. In the afternoon a business meeting under the presidency of Re. G. G. Martindale was held. Report was read by the Secretary of the Union, Rev. G. W. Turner, This showed that in the circuit there were twelve schools, with a total of 1742 scholars, 871 male and 871 female, showing a decrease of 306. The decrease was due largely to the prevalence of small-pox in the neighbourhood of the Mission Room. In addition 345 had left the schools. An address was also given by Rev. G. G. Martindale.

Two days later the same newspaper reported  on the quarterly meeting of the officials and leaders of the Rotherham Circuit, Primitive Methodist Connection, was held at the BethelChurch schoolroom, Parkgate.  There was some discussion about who would become the superintendent of the circuit for the following year as the Rev. J. G. Smith was resigning. The Rev. G. W. Turner was nominated but declined. The Rev. G. G. Martindale, who had been in station for a year was unanimously invited to remain another year, which was accepted.

Rawmarsh Primitive Methodist Chapel  Yesterday, a bazaar was opened in the Lecture hall, connected with the Rawmarsh Primitive Methodist Chapel, in aid of the reduction of the debt of £1800 existing on the new chapel. The stalls, which were filled with a nice assortment of articles, were arranged around the room, and were presided over by the ladies of the congregation. There was a moderate attendance at the opening ceremony. Amongst those present being Rev. G. W. Turner & G. G. Martindale.

Primitive Methodism in Rotherham Circuit:- The quarterly meeting of the officials and local preachers of the PMC, (Rotherham Circuit) was held at the Wellgate Chapel, Rotherham on Monday, the Rev. G. W. Turner, presided. The names of Rev. S. B. Reynolds of Leeds, fourth circuit & Rev. E. Quine, of Sheffield fourth circuit were submitted for superintendent of the circuit. S. B. Reynolds received 32 votes, E. Quine, 8. The Rev. G. G. Martindale consented to remain a third year. The Rev. G. W. Turner will remove from the circuit at the end of the connextional year.

Rotherham Primitive Methodist Sunday Schools:- The quarterly convention of the circuit was held at Wellgate Primitive Methodist Chapel on Saturday afternoon. The Rev. G. W. Turner presided. The Rev. Primitive Methodist Sunday School and band of Hope Union:- The annual meeting of the Rotherham Circuit branch was held at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Masbro’, on Saturday-the Rev. S. B. Reynolds (superintendent minister) presided. The report was read by the secretary, Rev. G. G. Martindale, showed that there were 13 schools in the circuit, one  of which was opened at Catcliffe last year. The number of teachers was 277, number of scholars, 1820 (925 boys, 895, girls), up on last years 1704. There were 7, 899 band of hope members, an increase of 88.

Rotherham Primitive Methodist Circuit:- During the past few days the Primitive Methodists of the Rotherham Circuit have been putting forth special efforts in connection with their foreign missions. On Sunday services were held in the Drill hall, Wellgate, Orchard Street and Parkgate Chapels, the visiting preachers being Rev. George Shaw of Grimsby and the Rev. J. Bell, returned missionary from Africa. On Tuesday, the Masbro Independent Chapel was filled for a meeting in connection with the movement. The Rev. G. G. John West, superintendant of the Ramsgate Circuit.

Presentation at Parkgate:- The Rev. G. Martindale, who removes from the Rotherham Circuit in the course of next week, was the recipient of a testimonial at Bethel Church, Parkgate on Wednesday evening. The testimonial consisted of a writing desk, with a lady’s companion for Mrs. Martindale, in addition to a number of other presents from private persons.

Scarborough : The Annual May Morning Breakfast was held at Jubilee Primitive Methodist Chapel yesterday. Breakfast was served at six o’clock to which about 140 persons sat down. The New Primitive Minister and the Chapel Anniversary: The Rev. G. Martindale, from Scarborough, the newly-appointed minister of the Melton Circuit, preached his opening sermons on Sunday, when the chapel anniversary was celebrated. On Monday a public tea was held in the school room, about sixty being present, and the arrangements being carried out by Mesdames Holden, Prentice, Baguley, Bryan, Johnson and Brotherhood. In the evening a rather thinly-attended recognition service was held in the chapel, and addressed by Mr. J. B. Miller, of Clawson (in the chair), Rev. G. G. Martindale, Rev. J. Ney (Baptist), Mr. Toon (Ashfordly) and Mr. T. Large.

Primitive Methodism: The annual convention of the Melton Mowbray Primitive Methodist Circuit was held in the schoolroom on Monday. In the afternoon a conference was held of Sunday-school workers and friends was held, when brief papers were given by Mr. J. T. Neckels on “How to improve the Efficiency of Sunday-school teaching and Rev. G. G. Martindale on “Some Neglected Points in Sunday Sunday School work” In the evening, addresses were given by Rev. G. G. Martindale and others.

British School Treats:

Melton Mowbray: The annual treats and prize distributions took place on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The former night was set apart for junior scholars, who partook of tea in the schoolroom before proceeding to the Corn Exchange for the entertainment and prize distribution. Mr. A. H. Marsh, senior townwarden, preside over a large attendance, and the proceedings were of an interesting character. A portion of evening was devoted to a magic lantern entertainment by Mr. W. Till, and the children went through a programme of songs and recitations. Thursday’s proceedings for the senior scholars were of a somewhat similar character, but aroused considerable more interest. Councillor Wakerley, of Leicester, an old scholar, presided, and also distributed prizes. Melton Mowbray: National Council of Evangelical Free Churches: A public inaugural meeting of the Melton Mowbray auxillary of this society was held in the PrimitiveMethodistChurch on Thursday evening, The Rev. Joseph Twidale occupied the chair, and was supported by the Rev. G. G. Martindale. After some remarks by the chairman, the Rev. G. G. Martindale, delegate to the meetings in London gave a lengthy report of the proceedings.

On Tuesday and yesterday a conference was held in Nottingham at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Hockley, of the Nottingham and Sheffield Districts Association of Primitive Methodist Ministers. The president, Rev. G. G. Martindale, of Nottingham, again occupied the chair.

In Connection with the New Basford Auxillary of the Nottingham & District Sunday School Union, special meetings were held on Saturday, in the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Duke Street. The proceedings commenced in the afternoon, when a conference took place, with the object of discussing the work of the Sunday schools.

In the evening a public meeting was held in the church, the attendance not being large. The chair was occupied by the Rev. G G Martindale.

Nottingham Primitive Methodist Church Council: The quarterly meeting of this body was held at Canaan Street, Church on Saturday under the presidency of Mr. H. Clarke., when the subject of Temperance Reform was considered. The Rev. G. G. Martindale and others took part in the discussion. The drinking facilities in Nottingham also engaged the attention of the meeting, and the granting of music hall licences was condemned-one speaker stating that recently 400 young people were together on one public house. On the other hand several business men held that the dearth of temperance hotels and ordinary refreshment houses was a disgrace to the city. Resolutions were passed in favour of the temperance bills now before Parliament.
