Joseph Mace (1841-1912) of New Mills was elected to the New Mills School Board in 1883, and was identified as a Primitive Methodist, according to two articles on ‘British Newspaper Archive’. I don’t have a subscription so can’t fully read the text, but it appears he lost his seat in 1886. Most inconveniently for us Joseph Mace the minister managed to fit in his entire career between censuses, but looking at the census entries for Joseph Mace of New Mills he and his wife Sarah seem not to have had children between 1872 and 1880. All very circumstantial evidence, but worth further investigation?
