Family

John was born in 1825 at Garforth, Yorkshire, to parents James, a labourer, and Martha. He was baptised on 9 October 1825 at St Mary, Garforth.

Census returns identify the following occupations for John.

  • 1851 PM minister
  • 1861 Baptist minister at Hamsterley, Co. Durham

He married Anne Hewson (abt1828-1852) on 10 July 1851 in the Louth Registration District, Lincolnshire. Census returns identify one child.

He married Jennet Simpson (d1859) in the spring of 1853 at Tadcaster, Yorkshire.Census returns identify one child.

  • Jane Elizabeth (b1854)       

He married Dorothy Ridley (abt1823-1893) in early 1861 at Sunderland, Co. Durham. Census returns identify three children.

  • Thomas Ridley (1861-1932) – commercial clerk (1881); commercial confidential clerk (1901)      
  • George Arthur (abt1863-1941) – emigrated to USA circa 1883; a sewing machine salesman (1910)
  • Mary Pratt (1866-1937) – pupil teacher (1881); school teacher (1901); married George Lowe, examining officer H.M. Customs (1911), in 1901        

John died between 1865 and 1871.
