Family
David was born on 3 February 1878 at Thurmaston, Leicestershire, to parents John Thomas, a framework Knitter (1881), and Priscilla.
The 1939 Register describes David as a minister of religion in Oldham but is not denomination specific. A newspaper article in 1931 identify that the Presbyterian church has a minister called David Mayes who took charge of the Presbyterian Church at Maryport in January 1914. He also served in Wooler, Tow Law, Northam and Highbury, London
He married Clara Langley (1882-1958) in the summer of 1907 at Leicester, Leicestershire. Census returns and birth records identify three children.

- Hubert Stanley (1911-1997) – a hand clicker in boot and shoe trade (1939)
David died on 23 February at Langdale Nursing Home, Alverstoke, Hampshire.
