James was born in the spring of 1849 at Hull Yorkshire, to parents John Noble, a portrait painter (1871), and Maria Thundercliffe.

He married Jane Elizabeth Harrison (1852-1928) in the summer of 1874 at Hull. Yorkshire. Census returns identify three of five children,
- John James (1875-1943) – a journalist (chief sub editor) (1911)
- Ruth Harrison (1877-1881)
- Dorothy (b abt1891) – a milliner (1911)
James died in late 1917 at Hull, Yorkshire.
