Samuel was born on 20 March 1804 at Wirksworth, Derbyshire, to parents Joshua and Martha. He was baptised on 15 September 1811 at Wirksworth.

He married Rachel Relton (abt1808-1848). Records identify six children.

He married Henrietta Watts (abt1797-1872) on 15 July 1849 at St Matthew, Brixton, London
Samuel died in late 1880 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
