James was born on 12 April 1824 at Wakefield, Yorkshire, to parents Charles Shaw and Joanna Ridsdale. He was baptised on 25 December 1824 at Wakefield. Census returns identify the following occupations for James.

- 1881 glass merchant employing one boy
He married Frances Ann Atterby (1824-1901) of Brigg, Lancs. Frances was the daughter of Samuel Atterby. Census returns identify seven children.

James died on 19 June 1886 at Manchester, Lancashire.
