Charles was born on 26 February 1846 at Redlynch, nr Downton, Wiltshire, to parents James Shergold, an agricultural labourer (1861), and Harriet Beauchamp.
Census returns identify the following occupation for Charles.

- 1901 retired Congregational minister
He married Martha Charlton (1846-1906) in the spring of 1872 in the Frome Registration District, Somerset. Census returns identify four children.

- William James (1879-1959) – a congregational minister (1911)
- Dora Flossie (1883-1963) – a school teacher (1911)
Charles died on 27 October 1904 at Rodborough, Gloucestershire.

Charles was my great-great-grandfather. His father was James Shergold (born 1824).
In 1880 he published a book – “Trees of the Lord, or Emblems of Christian Life”.
I have several good portrait photos of him if these are of any interest.
