Samuel was born on 11 May 1781 at Oldham, Lancashire. I have been unable to unambiguously identify his parents in online records.

Census returns identify the following occupations for Samuel in Grimsby.

• 1851 pauper (hat maker)
• 1861 formerly hawker

He married Betty Crossley (b1782) on 16 June 1799 at Prestwich. Census returns identify four children.

• Harriet (1815-1899) – married Thomas Ogelsby, a mariner (1851), in 1840
• Henry (1820-1892) – a grocer (1861); a smack owner & fish merchant (1871)
• William (1821-1871)- a twine spinner (1861)
• Mary (b abt1826) – only identified in 1841 census return

Samuel died on 22 January 1863 at Grimsby, Lincolnshire. He was buried on 25 January 1863
