James was born on 25 December 1812 at Wells Next the Sea, Norfolk, to parents John Thurger and Mary Curson. He was baptised on 28 December 1812 at Wells Next the Sea.

He married Elizabeth Hannah Dew (1818-1885) on 10 July 1839 at Salthouse, Norfolk. Census returns identify eight children.

  • James Curson (1840-1925) – a grocer & draper (1881)
  • John William (1842-1933) – a grocer & sub-postmaster (1901)              
  • Elizabeth Ann (Betsey) (1844-1915) – married Walter Wallace in 1866; married Samuel Semmens, an agricultural labourer (1891), in 1874
  • George Thomas (abt1847-1871) – a porter (1861)            
  • Emma Selina (1850-1852)
  • Sarah Evangeline (1853-1945) – married Henri Engel, a telegraph instrument maker (1901), in 1888; married George Langston, a roadman, in 1912               
  • Walter Edward (1855-1936) – a licensed hawker (1911)  
  • Alfred Matthew (abt1858-1889)                         

He married Ann Juggins, nee Daniel (1843-1910) on 26 May 1886 at Diss, Norfolk.

James died on 4 July 1906 at Diss, Norfolk.
