The photos on this page show Balmoral Mansions, Marlborough Road in Buxton. This was the Balmoral hotel and before that the Primitive Methodist Guest House. However, I don’t know if the latter two are one and the same, I rather doubt it.

As theĀ  pictures show, it was originally a pair of semi-detached houses and I have not established if the Guest House was both or only one of them. The only other reference to date is in an 1881 directory, ‘Whitcombe, Jasper, The Balmoral Boarding House, Devonshire Park’ but Methodism is not mentioned.

Devonshire Park was the first name for the area covered by Devonshire and Marlborough roads.

Does anyone know anything more?

  • A booklet titled ‘A tariff and souvenir’ for the Balmoral says the Balmoral was purchased in 1922 by the Primitive Methodist Homes Limited, to provide a holiday and rest centre under the most healthy and comfortable conditions at a very moderate cost. It is also available for Conferences and organised parties.
The Motto of the the house is Comradeship and visitors are invited to co-operate in the arrangement of social and musical evenings, rambles, picnics etc. Excursions by motor char-a banc will also be arranged. Tennis bowls and croquet are provided on the spacious grounds of Balmoral and billiards in the recreation room.
‘Balmoral’ is a large substantial stone building with 36 bedrooms, dining room, lounge and several smaller sitting rooms. There is also a spacious recreation room and delightful well wooded grounds are attached to the house and the situation is one of the best in Buxton. Hot and cold water in all the bedrooms (except the upper floor) and electric light throughout.
    All enquiries to the Matron.
